Organic mattresses: the only way to go
People always seem to know what is best for you. I mean, they think… that they know. They would love to design your life. They tell you: “choose this specific organic mattresses”, or “go to sauna three times a week”, buy “this”, go “this way”…. You may even hear: “start with sleep if you want to change everything and start healing”. Not long ago I heard: “It is not the tools that help you reinvent yourself, heal yourself, but meditation”. On my table is a book written by a well-known dietitian from the UK, who says: “your diet is the primary issue to look at”. I listen to them, read what they say, apply their suggestions if they make sense to me, but I choose my top priorities by myself. So should you.
Listen to this: Dr. Daniel Pompa, an expert in a field of nutrition said: “Is diet enough today? No. Diet is a part of my solution”.
We are all different, and have our unique needs at this specific moment in our lives. If you want to feel better, start with what you feel is best for you. It may be better and organic diet, well-organized sleep, daily exercise, meditation, educationm. Having said that, let’s dive into what we feel is one of the fundamentals to human health: sleep and organic fabrics, filling. Organic, most of all.

Conventional things release toxins
Tom O’Bryan, DC, CCN, DABCN, CIFM, is an expert on food sensitivities, environmental toxins, development of autoimmune diseases. He is an author and coauthor of several books, including: “You can fix your brain” and “The Autoimmune Fix”. O’Bryan travels the world and teaches about the complexity of our modern life and its consequences, especially the toxicity of nearly everything that we have and use daily. He said:
“Never in history have humans been exposed to the amount of toxins that we are exposed to. We even know that from our friend Dr. Dale Bredesen, and he wrote the book “The end of Alzheimer’s”, we know, that 60 to 65% of all Alzheimer’s is called inhalation Alzheminer’s. It is what you are breathing. You do not realize that your sofa is outgassing flame retardant chemicals into the air because you can’t smell it, you can’t see it. Or the plastic blinds on your windows are out gassing phthalates, plasticizer chemicals into the air. But they do.”
The way conventional cotton and things destroy our health
O’Bryan continues: “Or the plastic containers you use to store leftover food. The next day, the food has got those phthalates, those chemicals like BPA, in the chicken, and then you eat the chicken. Now, there is no evidence that the amount of chemicals that outgas out of your sofa, out of your down comforter, if it is not organic, out of your sleeping gear if it is not organic cotton, that the flamet retardant chemicals in those products and you are breathing them in, can’t smell ’em. But there is no evidence that the amount of flame retardant chemical that you breathe in from that sofa or from that down comforter is toxic to humans. And that is how they get away with this.
Is that they paid off the senators and the representatives to pass a legislation called “The toxic substance control Act”, which regulates all new chemicals introduced into the environment, and you have to prove that the amount of chemical you are exposed to is toxic to humans. It is not.
…But they accumulate in your body.” And the accumulation is a path to your health destruction. Environment as well.
What Phthalates are
Phthalates, are the substances added to plastics to strengthen their durability, flexibility, transparency. They are the esters of phthalic acid. Wikipedia: “Due to the ubiquity of plasticized plastics, the majority of people are exposed to some level of phthalates. For example, most Americans tested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have metabolites of multiple phthalates in their urine. In studies of rodents exposed to certain phthalates, high doses have been shown to change hormone levels and cause birth defects.”
Phthalates inhibit your brain and nerve growth. This substance is in nail polish for example. If it is used by a girl who wants to get pregnant, or is pregnant, the child may not develop its brain properly. There are studies that proved that. It is very serious.
Chemicals are nearly everywhere, even in non-organic fruits and vegetables. There is a study which proves that couples eating conventional fruits and vegetables had an 18% less likelihood of getting pregnant. It is very serious again. Moreover, people who eat such non-organic fruits and vegetables have a 26% less likelyhood of a live birth. That is why, we point out the attention of our readers again and again to the importance of choices we make on a daily basis. If you can, choose organic. Not everyone can have ones own garden. But if you may, it is worth having your own vegetables and fruits.
Conventional and organic facts and consequences
Just look around you. On your bed, bedding, kitchen, the furniture. The food containers. The food you eat, clothes you wear. Water your drink, air you breathe. How many of these are organic? When we think about the chemicals released into the atmosphere, that we breathe into our lungs, we start to understand the source of many diseases of our time. We wrote several articles about the huge impact of the pesticides in conventional cotton. Up to a kilogram of chemicals is used on a hectare of land under cotton. There is more and more information out there about the toxicity in our lives. What we need is to fully embrace the consequences of the plastics we use and pesticides in the conventional clothes. Organic is the way to go.
What is an organic mattress?
An organic mattress is a bed of which all or most of (exluding zippers for example) parts are organic: the fabrics and filling. The fabrics often have GOTS certification, and it can be either organic cotton, organic wool or linen. The organic filling of the mattress is very important as well. Conventional fabrics and filling can be toxic because of the agrichemicals (pesticides) in them, and by choosing organic mattresses, you do not introduce the chemicals into your surrounding and body. We wrote about it in our articles:
The pesticides in conventional cotton
For example, the pesticides in use in India, are: Methyl parathion (“Extremely hazardous”), Parathion (“Extremely hazardous”), Phosphamidon (“Extremely hazardous”),Chlorpyrifon (“Hazardous”), Fenvalerate (“Hazardous”), Organophosphorus compund, monocrotophos (“Highly hazardous”), Endosulfan (“Hazardous”), Quinalphos (“Hazardous”). Let’s choose just one: endosulfan sulfate. How does endosulfan affect health? The absorbtion through the skin or inhalation leads to diarrhea, muscle weakness, headaches, giddiness, nausea, blurred vision, vomitting. Higher doses of the chemical may result in coma and convulsions.
Just recently “Sleep Foundation” posted a review of the organic beds they knew of. They see a natural bed as:
“Technically speaking, no mattress is 100% organic. Even the most eco-friendly beds we’ve tested contain coils, adhesives, small hardware parts, and other components that are at least partially synthetic. However, truly organic materials may be used to construct the mattress, and some beds are primarily made of such materials.”
It is so very true when it comes to the box beds. But, there are organic beds of exceptional quality, like the ones created by EcoHealthLab, that are organic in every little part, with an exception of a zipper and a label with the name of our brand. Organic and natural, handmade and hand filled. A true piece of art.
Are organic mattresses eco-friendly?
What does “eco-friendly” mean? “Eco” comes from “ecology”, the connections within the living environment. Eco-friendly shows that a product or service has a good, not harmful impact on the environment.
The answer is : Yes. Just have a look on one aspect related to an eco-friendly mattress. Cotton, a fabric most of the beds are made of, can be either organic or conventional. Conventional cotton is created with the use of chemical pesticides, which are toxic or highly toxic substances added at all stages of the fabric creation. Most of the consumers are unaware of what a “100% cotton” t-shirt or bed really is. There are studies conducted by the universities that show the traces of these toxic agrichemicals from the plant’s cultivation, in a shirt, dress, etc. The pesticides from the production of the plant are found in the clothes made of it. Moreover, when the farmers add the pesticides during the time the plant grows, they pollute not only cotton, but biodiversity, earth, water and air as well. The farmers and their families are affected too.
Organic cotton on the other hand does not contaminate the environment. There are no chemical pollutants in water, air. The farmers use less water to cultivate it. Each of the organic parts used in an organic mattress is eco-friendly.
What is the most environmentally friendly mattress?
It is the one that is the most organic possible. No platic, no chemicals. The least water used during the plant production. On the market you will find many types or organic mattresses. But not all are equal. Make sure your bed has not metal parts (EMF). Be aware of the GOTS certificates. Know how it is filled. In our opinion, it is also very important if the bed is handmade, or machine created.
Are organic mattresses better?
They are not only better. Moreover, they are the only way to go if health and longevity are your priority. The chemicals inside the conventional fabrics and filling are there and are released into the atmosphere. Accumulation of toxins lead to diseases, of which Alzheimer’s is just one. The doctors, scientists talk about the mitochondrial disfunction, that is caused by the toxic environments. The mitochondrias are one of the key parts of our bodies. If they are weaker, your health deteriorates. The accumulation is like water dropping one drop at a time. We may think it is one drop, but over time such water can destroy the rocks.
