Is Organic Buckwheat Hulls filling healthy?
Organic or conventional? Does it matter and impact us? Equally, organic Buckwheat Hulls filling or conventional buckwheat hulls? Next, the hulls may look the same when you open the case of a pillow or a mattress filled with the buckwheat hulls. But the way they impact your health is very different. You can buy the conventional hulls and crops all around the world. Just as conventional cotton. We wrote about it in our articles Cotton pesticides in a conventional crop and Conventional Cotton has a dark side.
Further, we never hear about how toxic traditional cotton is, neither about the pesticides it has from its growth and production. Furthermore, to a small extent, the story of conventional buckwheat is similar. The choice you make between organic and conventional shapes your future. In a small way, but drop to drop, things accumulate.

A book changes the course of history
The pesticides are not a new concept nowadays. But, the first who wrote about them openly was Rachel Carson, a modest woman. By 1962 she had already published books that became popular. But, the real change and an ecological revolution came with was the book from 1962. It was the first to talk so openly about a mass contamination happening around the world. People read it with a sense of disbelief, as at that time they did not know what was really happening. Finally, the “New York Times” published it is parts, and it reached the president of the USA, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Silent Spring
We are talking here about “Silent Spring”. Rachel Carson, was a marine biologist and nature writer. Her book is about the pesticides like DDT and their impact on us and our world. It shows what happens now and what may become real as a consequence in the future. But, since that time, we have had more chemical pesticides, not less. Chimicals like glyphosate, which is nowadays the most poisonous substance currently in use. It is even found in conventional buckwheat, that is why we should always choose organic buckwheat hulls filling.
Rachel Carson told the truth to open our eyes
Carson, a delicate woman, was the first to speak openly about the actions huge corporations producing pesticides were taking against all creates of this planet. The substances first created to target pests and protect crops, were in fact affecting all biodiversity, killing birds, poisoning water, air. As Rachel Carson said: “In nature, nothing exists alone”. At the time her book was published, the pesticides described there were a crucial pillar of US agriculture.
Food chains
Moreover, nature is built of food chains. One organism eats another. If an animal on the basic level of the chain has a particualr pesticide in its system, like DDT (described in the book), creature that eats it will have the particles of the substance in its body as well. This, is also how the chemicals enter a human body. A person may think, that DDT the farms spray over crops cannot reach people in the cities. Unfortunately it can.
Proof
She desribes a group of people who did not have a direct contact with DDT, but it was discovered that their system had between 5.3 to 7.4 particles of DDT per million. This amount of the chemical may look insignificant, but in fact has been proven to be dangerous enough to lead to disintegration of liver cells. How could they have the poison in their organisms? They ate healthy food. Eggs were one of the products in their diet. But… the chickens that laid eggs ate alfalfa, which came from a farm that used DDT to protect crops. When the farmers spray the chemical, the plant has it in its system. Chickens ate the plant and laid eggs with the pesticide inside. Digested by a human, it affected liver cells.
What Rachel Carson did, shifted global thinking about environment and the future. When we stand in front of a simple decision: organic buckwheat hulls filling or conventional, we face the same consequences. Pesticides in conventional filling will contaminate our bodies and air, to influence in a small way everything we do and think.

Organic buckwheat hulls versus the conventional one: pesticidees
How does DDT relate to buckwheat? DDT is the first of the modern synthetic insecticides, and was developed in the 40s of the XX century. People used it to minimize typhus, malaria, as well as to fight insects in crop production, in gardens and homes. Within years, and especially after the publication of “Silent Spring”, it became widely known how toxic the substance was. It lead to reproductive problems in animals and humans, liver tumors and more life thretening consequences.
Moreover, the substance accumulates in fatty tissues, stays in the environment for a long time, travels in the upper atmosphere to reach distant locations. Because of this, it was recognized as a probable human carcinogen and a cancellation order of the pesticide was created in 1972.
Glyphosate
Just as in a case of DDT, glyphosate, a herbicide, was developed by Monsanto in 1974 to eliminate weeds. Its use grows year by year. “Statista” reports that from 1994 to 2014 the need for glyphostate worldwide grew from 56,3 million kilograms a year to… 825,8 million kilograms. The farmers use it to control weeds, but also to dry the grain especially buckwheat. The farmers say, that they widely use the herbicide, known also as Roundup, to dry it, and there is no other substance to help them do it. The truth was hidden from a public eye.

Health consequences of glyphosate use
Dr Andrzej Banach says, that glyphosate reduces the number of sperm in men working in agriculture, and in general may lead to cancer. Moreover:
- it disrupts the functioning of shikim pathway of bacteria in intestines. It reduces their number, while the bacteria are key in the digestive system, and help assimilate the compounds crucial for a human body
- glyphosate may be responsibe for vitamin D deficiencies
- as a result of the smaller number of bacteria in the gut, serotonin production is affected. Serotonin is essential for mood regulation, and its lack leads to problems with emotions, sleep, concentration, regeneration.
- the herbicide binds iron and zinc. It leads to the problems with their absorption, and then deficiency of these substances, especially zinc leads (among other factors) to autism and ADHD. Zinc is also very important for memory function and the maintenance of well-functioning synapses in human brain.

Organic Buckwheat hulls or conventional ones?
When you know the facts, it is far easier to make an informed decision. As dr Tom O’Bryan points out (we wrote about him in our article about an organic buckwheat hulls mattress, you can find it here: organic, the only way to go), the small amounts of toxic substances accumulate in the body. The farmers often dry conventional buckwheat hulls with glyphosate. You will most likely not know about it, the farmers do not share these facts. But, pesticides stay in the grains and hulls, and affect your health. If you can, go with organic. Each and every decision is important, and makes life easier when going forward.
