A phenomenal truth shared by an outstanding climber
Several years ago I attended a festival of climbing. It took place in a town in the mountains in Poland, called Karpacz. There were several prelections, and climbers from different European countries. One captured my attention immensly. It was not only the climber himself that was so interesting, his story, photos, but one special thing he said.
Peter Habeler, an Austrian climber, who climbed with Rienhold Messner, did several outstanding climbs in the Alps, the Karakoram and Himalayas. Which includes the ascents of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Kangchenjunga, Nanga Parbat, Eiger North face and more. You see, while talking about some of those adventures, he said:
“We climbers in the 70-ties and 80-ties of the XX century were somehow privileged when compared with current climbers. Of course nowadays people have much better equipment than we had back then. But we had something that was far more precious and lead to our achievements. It was our focus, being here and now, because we did not have the smartphones at that time.”
Phenomenal thought, isn’t it? (these words are not exactly word for word as he said, as I did not record them, but only made a hand-written note of his fascinating speech.) Life seems simpler with a stronger will, that helps us focus on what is good for us. This is also one of the answers to a question how to look younger naturally.
The TVs, computers, smartphones are massive distractions, which often takes us away from what is really important. And the ancesors new what was crucial. One of those essential issues has a crucial impact on our health and looks.
Learning from the ancestors
Ages ago, when people did not have all those “toys” that Habaler saw as distractions, life was different. They did not have the electronic devices, but moreover, drugs were limited as well. Life was lead closer to the land and the natural laws of nature. They had to depend on their bodies more. People were somehow “forced” to find that inner physical and mental strength, that we humans have, but in our current times often forget about or worse, take for granted.
One of such jewels, is the secret ingredient, the fountain of youth. Often ignored, it is as essential to us as breathing. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce… the sleep.
Why is sleep important
After 7 to 9 hours of sleep we feel rejuvenated, look smoother and feel calmer. It happens, because sleep positively impacts our health. During the sleep hours, numerous hormones are activated, and vital processes take place. We sleep, but our bodies and brains do not. They remain active, to remove the waste products from the tissues and rebuild the cells. Without those calm hours at night, supporting healthy brain function and maintaining healthy growth is very difficult. Moreover, it leads to chronic health problems.
What is it about
In this article, you will read about
- the sleep hormones that take a huge part in your beauty sleep,
- healthy sleep habits to follow and
- what happens to the body when you don’t have a good night’s sleep.
All of this is important, as so often we take our bodies and time for granted. We feel that if we have something “for free”, in our bodies and lives, it is of no value. The advertisements seduce us, by showing us quick and easy artificial paths to feeling better, by giving us drugs, treatments that can also become our addictions. The problem with the solutions coming from the outer world is severe. Simply because it shows us, that we are not enough and cannot help ourselves by simply using what our bodies and minds have for us. They give us pills while often simply bringing our lives to the state of balance, having a good night’s sleep would helps us heal and look good. Sleep Hormones
The ideal time to fall asleep is between 22 and 23 at night. The hours before midnight your body uses to regenerate, absorb cosmetics and produce growth hormone plus melatonin. What are the sleep hormones responsible for sleep and regeneration during the calm hours? These are:
- melatonin
- ghrelin and leptin (hunger and weight regulation)
- growth hormone
- cortisol (stress hormone)
- estrogen and progesteron
These hormones are active mostly at night, but their impact is felt during our wake hours. How often have you eaten too much during a day after a night filled with poor sleep? That is why one of the consequences of not sleeping well is obesity.
Cortisol and sleep
For example, around midnight cortisol reaches its lowest level. Which hormone wakes you up? It is cortisol.
Melatonin what is it
Simply put it is a hormone which our brains produce as a result of darkness. It helps regulate your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock). Melatonin increases in darkness and decreases in light. Moreover, it helps us maintain healthy sleep. That reveals, why it is so important to sleep in complete darkness and avoid blue-light exposure before falling asleep or at night.
Natural creation of collagen
When we sleep, our body goes through the regenerative processes, stimulating collagen production and reparation of the cells. What is collagen? It is a protein which maintains skin elasticity, stretchiness and healthy joints. Very important for the entire body, as it is in our bones, blood, muscles, skin (three quarters of it) and protein. That is one of the reasons why your skin saggs after sleepless nights.
Lack of sleep and sunbathing
We love sunbathing. It is relaxing and very pleasurable. Our skin becomes smoother and changes its colour. Yet, in long-term, sun exposure leads to aging of the skin. According to the studies published in “Clinical and experimental dermatology”, lack of sleep may impact negatively your skin’s ability to regenerate after sunbathing and exposure to harmful environmental factors.
How to look younger naturally yet still be able to enjoy sun exposure? Let’s not forget here, that sunbathing is essential to our health and longevity. But, in small doses each day. On Okinawa, a Japanese island, where people live the longest, sun exposure is one of the keys to their health and length of their lives. They expose their faces, arms and legs to Sun each day. 15 minutes is enough. (read more in our article here). In other times, cover your face by wearing a hat if possible.
Sleep hygene for a younger you
How to look younger naturally? It is possible to achieve, step by step, day by day, applying the simple techniques.
-
- It is ideal for our looks to sleep between 7 to 9 hours.
- Make sure the surrounding you sleep in is dark, as light impacts melatonin production.
- Minimize exposure to blue light for at least 1 hour before falling asleep (it supresses melatonin production)
- Do not drink water or any other liquids at least one hour before falling asleep (the need to go to the toilet will wake you up at night if you do)
- As Paul McKenna (the well-known hypnoterapist we wrote about here), use your bed for sleep and sex only. It will help your brain connect it to relaxation and sexual pleasure
- Have a sleep ritual: fall asleep and wake up at smilira times each day
- Check whether you snore or have sleep apnea while sleeping. Sleep apnea for example impacts your mitochondria, which affects your strength and leads to faster aging. We wrote about it here
- Relax before falling asleep. You may start by doing breathing exercises, by simply breathing in deeply through the nose while counting to 4, and breathing out slowly while counting to 6. Repeat as many times as you need.
