A natural mattress basically has two major parts; its cover and the filling. The companies nowadays create both the cover and the filling with synthetic or non-organic parts that are harmful for both the user and the environment.
Regular (non-organic) cotton
People love to use cotton throughout the world, and so it is in high demand. Unfortunatelly, it also means that it is the least healthy to us humans and the environment. When comparing organic cotton versus conventional cotton, there are various facts to consider. Basically, the farmers produce conventional cotton and do not much care about the environment. The impact of such cotton cultivations on the environment is pretty high compared to the organic cotton of which a natural mattress is made of.
Toxic and deadly chemicals in use to create the things we wear
Excessive amounts of fertilizers and pesticides are used to cultivate regular cotton products. Although the amount of land used to grow cotton hasn’t changed for decades, the yields have boosted by whopping 300% with the help of these powerful chemicals and fertilizers. That explains the amount of impact it has created on the environment.
The chemical substances in fertilizers and powerful pesticides get absorbed into natural water sources. Later, they end up in the bodies of humans and other animal species. Another consequence can be seen in the farmers. They suffer from various health issues such as respiratory problems, skin infections, vision loss, even death.

Dirty truth
The processing of cotton (in the factories) is not much cleaner. Large amounts of bleach and other chemicals are in use to clean cotton fiber. For some people, the traces of these chemicals can be allergic and may cause health issues such as skin irritations.
This is why it is strongly suggested that we should stop purchasing non organic cotton products and try to minimize our need for such harmful productions.

Organic Cotton Facts
In contrary to that, organic cotton products are healthier for both the user and the environment. Hardly any chemicals are in use to grow organic cotton. All the strategies and materials the farmers apply during the cultivating process pose very low impact on the environment. Basically, organic cotton cultivations don’t ruin the natural fertility of the soil. Instead, such crops replenish the condition of the soil. Since the farmers do not use any harmful pesticides or chemical fertilizers, these cultivations don’t pollute natural water sources. Such approach helps to maintain the biodiversity while fulfilling the human needs.

Instead of synthetic pesticides, organic cotton farmers use natural pesticide strategies that are completely friendly to the environment. Moreover, organic cotton cultivations don’t encourage genetically modified seeds.
Global organizations monitoring the use of chemicals
Luckily, the understanding of what is happening in our world is growing. People like you and me want to know what happens and what is in what we wear and use. The internet helps us all spread information. There are organizations that focus on gaining knowledge and shwoing us the truth. Among these groups of people are:
Environmental Justice Foundation
(an organization that publishes reports about different aspects of the natural world and its protection, with great papers on the use of fertilizers and pesticides)
(we are beginning to learn more about them)
What is also great to know, is that in the XX century when the chemical pesticides were in use for the first time, there was limited, to zero understanding of their deadly effect on the world. But… there was a woman, who knew and wanted to talk about it. Her courage and understanding of the future impact of what was happening back then, influenced the entire world. It was Rachel Carson, and a book she wrote “Silent Spring” that shocked many of the contemporaries, including JFK (the president of the USA).
