How we live, is who we become
Our surrounding has a great impact on how we feel. Let’s do an experiment: First: simply observe your emotions when you imagine walking through the woods, laying on the beech. Second, now see yourself being in an industrial city full of chimneys and dust. How different do those two images make you feel? I believe they give you vastly opposite emotions. Bright colours, fresh space, light on one side and grey, dark, dirty, depressive on the other.
What’s more, be it a city or a bedroom, the importance of the design is the same. However, everything starts in your home, so by focusing on the bedroom design ideas, we will see how they influence you and what to do to make your space your greatest friend.
A true story:
During II World War, Gibraltar, a Spanish city located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, was an important fortress to protect for the British and their allies. They fought German and Italian invasion. Miles of tunnels were carved in the limestone rock of Gibraltar. Consequently, a true “underground city” emerged there, with barracks, offices, a hospital, rooms, and tunnels.
Soldiers stayed there for months without seeing natural light only that coming from the lamps. Moreover, the interiors were humid. Additionally, depression was a common mental state among them. It came not only as a result of the stress of war but also because of the interiors they spent days and months in. Darkness, humidity experienced for months impacted them heavily.
Imporvement of mental health through good house and city design:
“Broken window syndrome”.
Robin Sharma, an internationally acclaimed author, motivational speaker, personal development and business coach recently told a story, he called ” A broken window syndrome”. It is based on a true story that happened in New York, where a few broken windows in the houses lead to more and more destruction.
Crime and drugs were the final result. Indeed, dirty streets and broken windows, influenced people, who readily accepted crime and drugs. On the opposite side is the way police dealt with it. Eventually, they were instructed to keep the streets clean, among other things. And… the crime level has decreased.

Feng Shui home
Some say feng shui is magic, a little bit unreal. I see it as pure energy. Feng Shui helps us invite harmony into our surroundings to influence our lives, even on a very deep level. Over 3000 years old set of principles that first originated in ancient China, use practical tools like : bagua, clearing the space, knowledge about specific placement of furniture, the importance of free energy flow. Exceptional wealth of Hong Kong is attributed to Feng Shui, as it has been build based on Feng Shui principles.
Whether it is love, relationships, family, wealth or way of life, all of them have their specific placement on the map of your flat and home (bagua). According to feng shui, bedroom should be placed far from front doors, to give you sense of safety and stability. Read more in our article: Feng shui bedroom layout. Moreover, feng shui places a great importance on checking whether there is a geopathic and electromagnetic stress in the space for bedroom. If there is, it is best to move bedroom to another area of the flat or house.
Psychology of colour
To see how important colours are in our lives, simply look on your wardrobe. What kind of colours do you have there? Do the colours change when you change emotionally? Yes, they do. Your mood influeneces what you wear, and which colours you mix. It happens the other way around too. The colours can influence your mood as well. The same happens in your bedroom and the entire home. The correct use of colour is one of the most important bedroom decor ideas.
Colours affect you through physiological and special reactions. To those physiological reactions, and you may be surprised by discovering it, belong:
-
-
-
- feeling cheerful
- relaxed
- support of the immune system
- appetite stimulation
- accelerating digestion
- help in removing emotional blockages
- lowering pressure and causing internal excretion of body fluids
- dilating capillaries
-
-
to name just a few of the reaction a person may experience as a consequence of color psychology of different colors. We will explore this topic in depth in our next article on psychology of colour. Further, the use of colour may widen or narrow a room in your eyes. It is truly amazing what happens when you choose the right colours for bedroom or the entire flat. They activate or calm you down.
For example, it is orange that has the greatest activity, then yellow, red, green and purple. The smallest activity have: blue, green-blue and violet (cold hues).
Define the feelings for bedroom, choose colours
Your bedroom is a place of rejuvenation, and it helps choose the right colours. It is good to know, that warmth or chill of the colours has a great impact on your emotional reactions. If relaxation is what you are seeking, choose warm and bright hues from the bottom of the room, as it gives you the feeling of relief and rising.
Warm and dark (for example a wooden floor) colours on the lower part of the bedroom give the feeling of stability. Green relaxes the nerves, but it also depends on its saturation, brightness and place of use.

Minimalism
Minimalism in your bedroom is important and a good choice from many angles. When it comes to relaxation, the less means the better. The great bedroom decor ideas are mostly related to minimalism, simplicity. We will expand this topic further in this articles in the coming days and in the articles that follow, as it is so important. Steve Jobs famously said “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication“.
Let me add here: our beds are truly minimalistic. But, to reach their perfection of design, we worked on them continuously for over 9 years. And it does not stop here. Our organic mattresses are loved by those who use them, not only because they are healthy, but also because of their beautiful simplicity and practicality.
Bed Placement
The more you know yourself, the better your life becomes. In bedroom decor ideas, the place you put your bed on plays a key role. It is not really that it needs to look good, but to give you good feelings that counts. And, not surprisingly, good feelings bring great design. There are many principles that guide the healthy bed placement, and we will mention here just a few, to describe the issue more in our thorough article on this topic.
a. Feng Shui bed placement
It suggests putting your bed far from doors to the room, because if it is close, fully relaxing might be a problem to you. Moreover the same applies to the windows, as if a window is above the head of the bed, you will most likely feel inner tension and worries. Based on psychological reaction to the possibility of someone appearing at the window.
b. Feng Shui and other furniture. “Cutting chi“
Other pieces of furniture are also important. Feng Shui mentions “cutting chi” of tables, wardrobes, bedside tables and other things in a room. If their “cutting chi” points at the bed, a person may feel that if they get out of bed, they will be attacked by a strong force.
What is the “cutting chi”? It is the energy that emanates from the sharp corners of objects. The good thing is, that the energy weakens the further the piece of furniture is from the bed. The solution is to place them as far as possible, or simply, remove them from the bedroom.
c. The bed placement has a crucial importance for your feeling of serenity and safety
Safety is one of the crucial bedroom decor ideas. Sense of safety depends on many factors, some where described above. Further, important are:
-
-
- the position in relation to the cardinal directions (head is best to the north)
- texture of the walls,
- position in relation to the light (it would be best if you had your back to the window), and doors (explained above)
- shape of the bed.
- placement of the beds if there are two or more in the room
-
Furthermore, a person who feels fear will feel best when their bed is close to the wall, in the corner or in a recess in the wall. Those who are self-confident will prefer a bed positioned in the center of the room. (after: Neufert)
Organic or regular? What fabrics to choose
When we surround ourselves with things, we invite to our homes their history of creation as well. Whether they are organic or conventional, they will emit toxic substances into atmosphere or not. Especially in the bedroom, where we spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping. We inhale particles of substances emitted by objects in our environment, we also touch them, and they enter our blood stream through our skin.
Conventional or organic?
Often we simply do not have the time to check the real ingredients of the things we buy. The conventional clothes or bed linen, mattresses and pillows may have “100% cotton” labels attached to them, and we trust they are pure. Nothing can be further from the truth. Conventional “100% cotton” may have up to 10 different toxic substances used during its creation.
Some of those toxins are so dangerous that even one drop of it falling on human skin can kill the person. It has been proven in scientific studies, that chemicals used, stay in the fabric, and washing does not remove them. If you looked on the fabric’s process of creation, you would see seriously ill farmers. Moreover, land and water contamination, biodiversity destruction by use of chemicals like fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, defoliants during its creation.

Bedroom decor ideas: an infant cradle
Treat yourself like you would an infant
How would you treat an infant? With the greatest care and attention. The baby’s skin is so delicate and soft, so vulnerable. And, what if you could treat yourself like this, with such love and care? How would your life change? I imagine, you would choose the best, organic fabrics for the child, and a bed frame to protect it, made of safe materials. Now, imagine, that you are that baby to yourself.
Chemicals in wood furniture
Thinking about wood furniture? Wood bed frames? Look for pure, organic ones, as wood finishes often contain harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs), just like stain and paint, with toxic ingredients added to encourage quicker dry time. Often to change the color of wood people use dyes and stains. They may contain toxic ingredients such as heavy metals and formaldehyde.
Their particles eventually end up in the air of the room, and people inhale them.
When we choose things, we influence our future lives. The things stay with us and cocreate the atmosphere of the places we inhabit. Finally, the slower our lives are, the more visible the quality becomes. Through touch, look, smell, taste, we can discover what is good for us and what is not. Choose organic, it will help your body stay healthy long term and support the environment.
The correct mattress to sleep on
As mentioned in the paragraph describing feng shui, bed placement, we mentioned the preferred construction of the bed. The simpler, the better. It is also great if the mattress is made of natural, organic fibres. The mattresses can be soft, and hard. many of us slept on soft beds and developed spine problems as a consequence. In fact, for many of us soft beds are not healthy. When deciding which bed to choose, make a decision based on your body built. The thinner you are, the softer the bed should be.
In our company, we create organic buckwheat beds, that can be soft, harder and very hard, based on the composition of inner filling. Handmade by a genius seamstress, and handfilled. It took us over 9 years of constant improvement to create such a minimalistic beauty.

Secrets of a sexy bedroom
Your bedroom is a magical space for your relaxation and pleasure. Paul McKenna, about whom we wrote when reviewing his book “I can make you sleep” (find the article here) said: “There are only three things you can do in bed:
-
-
- sleep
- make love
- read this book or listen to a recording of it”
-
This room is the intimate centre for those in a loving relationship, marriage. It is here we dive into the loving bond and sensual pleasures. There are essential elements to look at when designing the sexy bedroom. Bed is the most important thing. It needs to be comfortable, healthy and spacious. As we discussed in the previous paragraphs, among the good bedroom decor ideas, minimalism is of the greatest importance. It is the “cutting chi” and the focus on sleep, relaxation and pleasures that asks for minimalism.
The less furniture, the better. Steve Jobs emphasized the importance of simplicity when designing his iconic iPnoes, iMack’s. They had only that which is essentail, and not more. We all know the final result. Tools designed by “Apple” became art, so beautiful, functional, intuitive and addictive, that people stood in long quees to buy them. This is what your bedroom should be.
Sexy and functional bed
Make your bed in one piece. Both the bed frame, and the mattress. Sometimes we make big beds, the Kings and Queens out of two beds, connected closely with our unique zipping system and stripes, so close that the gap cannot be felt. Then they go into one outer cover, so they feel and look like one. This is the only situation when two beds can form one successful and happy bed for a couple. As Karen Kingston suggests on her blog, do not choose separate beds connected visibly together.
Sexy bed linen
The bed linen is another great element here. In our previous article we wrote about being here and now, to touch, smell, look, taste. Indeed, they take you from thinking into sensual being in the moment. This is when the texture of the fabric becomes important. Organic fabrics feel very different than the regular ones. Organic satin bed linen stimulates the senses, because of the way it feels on your skin and under your fingers. It is smooth, and truly beautiful.

Other principles of a sexy bedroom also include:
-
-
- colours for bedroom (red, green, blue, violet),
- paintings or drawings, photograps showing love, loving embraces,
- order in the room, no chaos or dirt
- not too many family photographs,
- no mirrors,
- no computers, tv’s, desks, as they especially defocus, and take attention to the time a person works, and problems related to it.

Design can be a weapon as well
Take two cities. Prague and Warsaw. Czech and Poland, two countries with different history. Warsaw, the capital of Poland, was called the Paris of the east, it was that beautiful. It’s building, streets and trees, monuments and sculptures were there to sing for the glory of Polish culture and turbulent past. Furthermore, full of churches, museum, paintings. Moreover, it was romantic, in which life flowed on hundreds of years of tradition.

Warsaw in 1944, Ewa Faryaszewska, Old Town
When war ended, Warsaw was nearly entirely flat like a table, as Germans destroyed it in 1944. Later, following the international agreements between the UK, the USA and Russia, Poland became a Russian republik. Which in reality meant total domination, massive killings of people, ugly architectural recreation of the cities and towns. Moreover losing freedom and closed borders.
Rebuilt to emotionally enslave people
Governed by the Russians, Warsaw like a phoenix was built from the ashes. However, the new city was very different, with much too wide streets, ugly buildings, wrongly designed urban spaces. Further, the main railway station was even worse. It was as if you entered underground tunnels, where rats lived. And when trains began their journey, they went through scarry dark tunnels
That place always shocked me, because it was a perfect design that was to depress people and make them afraid. Dark, dirty, underground, no light at the end of a tunnel. It did not give the impression of joy, beauty of life and chances. The design made it so.

Florence in Italy
The Italians knew that over 500 years ago
Architecture has a great impact on how we feel. It may surprise you, but the builders of the Italian cities of Florence, Sienna, Padua, Venice knew that. Especially in Florence, great urban design was chosen carefully to create a city that was to become the power in the world. Beauty, light, art, architecture, bridges, sculptures were to create the experience of love and pride in being human.
Moreover, it was a tool for the Medici in the XIV, XV centuries, the ruling family of that time. Further, they created a masterpiece, that helped elevate Florence to become the real capital of art and commerce of that time. Finally, it was a conscious choice to build beautiful buildings and streets. The revelation of renaissance followed. The flowering of a human being.

Your immediate surrounding will impact the way you feel and what you do.
Ugly designed spaces will create chaotic thoughts, dark rooms will make it easier to feel depressed, overwhelmed and distracted. You see, let me tell you a story. I am Polish, I was born in Poland. I used to travel a lot as well, and when I was visiting Czech Republik, I felt stunned at their untouched by wars architecture. Prague stands, with is gorgeous buildings as it used to hundreds of years ago. Other cities and towns as well.
Another obesrvation stunned me: people are peaceful there. I felt that these two things are interconnected.
