Brief history of linen fabrics
Linen fabrics. Fragments of linen fibres are some of the oldest textiles discovered in the world, dating as far back as 8 000 years BC. It was discovered in Switzerland. Ancient Egypt was a place linen was used as well. Seen as tremendously precious, was worn by the higher class only, and chosen to mummify the bodies as a sign of wealth and purity. We think 8 000 years before Christ (which means over 10 000 years ago counting from now), is a long time ago.
Imagine, the archeologists are certain, that the fabrics coming from prehistoric caves in Georgia were linen, and they are far older that the textiles discovered in Swiss lake dwellings. They say… linen from Georgia is 36 000 years old… But even more amazing is to imagine a far more ancient time. In 1999 and 2002 the archeologists find two human sculls (homo erectus) there. After a careful examination, they date them back to … 1.8 million years ago. So many generations, slow changes.

Key to survival
Just imagine people living back then, without all the things we now see as necessary. We can assume those people had lives filled with love, food, emotions, making love, fights and gaving birth to their offsprings. They did not have the central heating systems, refrigerators, cars and carpets. Neither washing machines, telephones, tvs, computers, sewing machins, needles, spoons. But they lived, and coexisted with what they had.
One of the few things they had 36 000 years ago were linen fabrics. Without a doubt, those people had only the most necessary belongings, as they needed to move from place to place in search for food, shelter, water.
Big lie of our time
Nowadays, big companies try to make us believe that we need all sorts of things. In fact, just recently I heared two of my teachers, Jon and Missy Butcher reveal their personal experiene with one of the highest masterminds in the world they had been part of. There were high level marketers in the group, tremendously rich people. What my teachers said, was those people spent their days on thinking how to persuade us to buy all the things we do not really need, and how to know about us even more, to manipulate more skillfully. More things, less peace of mind.
but…
What I am getting at here, is not tell you to go back to the prehistoric times and remove everything you own. But to imagine, that if those people back then were able to live having just a few things, it is possible for us in our modern times to lead simpler less cluttered lives.
Steve Jobs and the most loved company in the world
Steve Jobs the famous entrepreneur, focused on minimalistic products, and people loved him for it. Each and every detail was important, and the buyers saw it as a devotion to their well-being. Steve was sure that we needed less, but of the greatest quality. Only that which was necessary. And perfection, minimalism were a path to it. He famously said:
“Minimalism is the ultimate sophistication”.
Apple was a result. iPhones, iPads, iPods, Mac Computers. Just a few products Apple was selling lead to them becoming the iconic company. (but… we need to add here, that there was a dark side of this story as well. The Apple factory in Mongolia destroyed the natural land by polluting it with highly toxic waste.)
Each of Steve Jobs’ products was complete. Simple to use, even understood by a child. It is what we could say about the linen fabrics. It is versatile, durable, beautiful, strong, good for the cold days and protective during the warm ones. Absorbing humidity, anti-bacterial.
